Abstract
The present study was carried out in order to evaluate the sensitivity of 8 different chemotherapeutic agents including Trimethoprim/Sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim) to 388 strains of cholera El Tor vibrios isolated from 1969 & 1970 epidemics in Pusan district. Oxoid multodisk and diagnostic sensitivity test agar base were used throughout this study and method described by Oxoid laboratory instruction was applied,. and the following results were obtained.
1. Three hundred and seventy-five strains (97.0%) of cholera El Tor vibrios were sensitve and 10 strains (2.5%) were resistant to Bactrim paper disk containing 25¥ìg.
2. Sixty strains(88.2%) out of 68 of cholera El Tor vibrios isolated in 1969 were sensitive and 8 strains (11.7%) were resistant to Bactrim paper disk containing 25¥ìg. Three hundred and eighteen strains (99.3%) out of 320 of cholera El Tor vibrios isolated in 1970 were sensitive and 2 strains (0.6%) were resistant to Bactrim paper disk containing 25¥ìg.
3. Eight different chemotherapeutic agents including Bactrim showed the cholera El Tor vibrios to be sensitive and very sensitive in the following order: erythromycin¢¥ and chloramphenicol ???100%, Bactrim ???95.1%, tetracycline ???90%, sulfadiazine ???43%, amphicillin ...22%, penicillin G ???2%, and methicillin ???1% respectively.
4. The cholera El Tor vibrios were resistant in the following order: penicillin and methicillin ???98%,amphicillin ???62%, sulfadiazine ???50%, tetracycline ???9%, and Bactrim ...2.5% respectively.
